This article traces the first three decades of learning support at Auckland University of Technology, from the establishment of Te Tari Āwhina in 1986 to its later relocation to Te Mātāpuna Library & Learning Services. More than an institutional history, it explores how a distinctive learning advising culture emerged through the intellectual, cultural, and ethical commitments of the people who shaped the team. The account examines the growth of learning support from a small equity-focused initiative into a multifaceted service encompassing embedded academic literacies, Māori and Pacific student support, postgraduate provision, peer mentoring, specialist services, and evolving approaches to one-to-one consultations. Drawing on institutional records, published sources, and practitioner recollections, the article highlights the interplay between institutional change, pedagogical innovation, and social justice commitments. The AUT experience offers insight into how learning advising identities, practices, and professional cultures develop and adapt within Aotearoa New Zealand tertiary education.
